Very first Capsule hotel opens up in China

US banks to close foreign diplomatic mission accounts

The diplomats of several countries said they were actively searching for new banks but were having little success.

Federal officials heard the concerns of roughly 150 envoys during a closed-door briefing on Thursday at the United Nations in New York City.

Some diplomats said the UN budget could be affected by the account closures.

The Wall Street Journal newspaper suggested in November that the banks' decisions were prompted by difficulties in adhering to federal money-laundering regulations affecting international transfers.

Regulations have been tightened since 9/11 in an effort to stop the flow of illegal foreign funds for crimes like financing terrorist acts.

'Big concern'

Speaking after the briefing, state department official Patrick Kennedy told reporters the missions had been given advice on "alternative approaches" they could take to obtain banking services.

He stressed that the banks' decisions were based on commercial reasons and "not because the bank is saying that the embassy of Xanadu or the mission of Shangri-La is engaged in some nefarious activity".

The US would continue its work with both diplomats and the banking industry, he added.

JP Morgan Chase, which handles many diplomatic accounts, did not specify a reason for terminating the services.

But reports suggest it may be because monitoring the accounts has become too costly.

In a letter dated 30 September, the bank told its diplomatic clients it had "made the decision to close its division that serves diplomatic and foreign government entities" and that its decision was not a reflection on how the envoys handled their accounts.

The closures at JP Morgan are scheduled to come into effect on 31 March and will affect mission accounts but not those of individual diplomats.

The BBC's Barbara Plett at the United Nations says this is a big concern for diplomats, with at least six telling reporters they had not yet been able to find another bank for their mission, even though they have been shopping around.

If they fail to do so by the end-of-March deadline, they will have trouble paying their employees and bills, our correspondent adds.

London: In what mirrors the book and Hollywood movie ‘The Da Vinci Code’, art historians claim to have uncovered a real-life Da Vinci code, after they found tiny letters painted into the eyes of the Mona Lisa.

They discovered the mysterious hidden message while studying magnified images of Leonardo Da Vinci's most famous painting which is hanging in the Louvre in Paris, British tabloid The Sun reported.

Art historian Silvano Vinceti said: “To the naked eye the symbols are not visible but with a magnifying glass they are clearly see. We know Da Vinci used symbols so we are confident that they are a message from him. “In the right eye appears to be the letters LV, which could well stand for his name.

In the left eye there are also symbols. It is difficult to make them out but they appear to be the letters C and E or B which is in the Louvre in Paris.”

The art historians from Italy's National Cultural Heritage committee also discovered a 72, or possibly an L and a 2, painted into a bridge in the background of the famous portrait.

The experts examined the Mona Lisa after finding a book in an antique shop that claimed there were tiny hidden symbols in the eyes. “The question now is, what do they mean?” Silvano was quoted as saying.

The Guardian newspaper suggested the letters may be a clue to the identity of the female model in the painting, which has been an enduring mystery for ages. In the bestselling novel and movie ‘The Da Vinci Code’, an art historian, played by Tom Hanks, finds sinister hidden messages in the Italian genius's artworks. PTI

Ants Can Solve Math Puzzle

Washington: An ant colony is probably the last place one would expect to find a maths whiz, but a study has shown that they could solve complex, dynamic problems, and may even help computer experts develop better software. 

An international team has found the ants are capable of solving difficult mathematical problems and also able to do what few computer algorithms can — adapt optimal solution to fit a problem, the Journal of Experimental Biology reported. 

Using a novel technique, scientists tested whether Argentine ants could solve a dynamic optimisation problem by converting classic Towers of Hanoi maths puzzle into a maze. But since ants cannot move disks, they converted the puzzle into a maze where the shortest path corresponds to the solution with fewest moves in the toy puzzle. 

The ants were given one hour to solve the maze by creating a high traffic path between their nest and the food source, after which time the researchers blocked off paths and opened up new areas of the maze to test the ants' dynamic problem solving ability. 

After an hour, the ants solved the Towers of Hanoi by finding shortest path around the edge of the maze. “Finding the most efficient path through a busy network is a common challenge faced by delivery drivers, telephone routers and engineers,” says Chris Reid, who led the study. AGENCIES

Froyo Update for My-touch Fender

The official word is out that beginning Jan 12 T-mobile will start sending updates to the Fender version of MyTouch. to make sure if you have the Fender version then look for a 3.5 mm jack. It will be sent out in waves, so it means that you should be getting a notification about it by Feb 1. Below is the full press release:

Beginning January 12, 2011, the highly anticipated Android 2.2 Froyo operating system will be made available to T-Mobile customers using the myTouch 3G 3.5mm Jack and myTouch Fender LE via over-the-air update (OTA).

myTouch devices should be fully charged before beginning the download. The Android 2.2 Froyo update will provide a number of benefits, including a new or enhanced home screen experience, new or improved Exchange e-mail integration, and the addition of Faves Gallery.

Note: This update is for myTouch 3G 3.5mm Jack and myTouch Fender LE customers. Customers using the original myTouch 3G were sent the Android 2.2 Froyo update in staggered waves between October 13, 2010 and December 15, 2010.

The update will be sent to customers using the myTouch 3G 3.5mm Jack and myTouch Fender LE in staggered waves beginning January 12 and we anticipate all customers will receive it by February 1, 2011.

The timeline for receiving the OTA cannot be expedited. The delivery is being managed by Google and T-Mobile representatives are unable to manually push the software to customers who ask to receive it before February 1, 2011.
